Metglas, Inc. supports Horry County schools in robotics competitions
Metglas, Inc. of Conway, South Carolina, and its employees, are assisting students from local schools as they participate in a variety of robotics competitions. The intent of these competitions is to provide students with opportunities to be creative, to learn mechanical and electronic principles, and to work as teams toward a common goal. The competitions are organized by FIRST (For Innovation and Recognition of Science and Technology) a non-profit group founded by Dean Kamen, inventor and advocate for science education. More background on the FIRST program can be found at: http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/
According to Rachel Platt (Executive Director of Human Resources) at Metglas, several Metglas employees have volunteered to provide guidance to teams at local elementary and high schools, and the company has provided funding to support local participation in the robotics competitions. Five Metglas employees worked with the high schools in Conway, Carolina Forest, and Aynor, South Carolina. At the elementary school level, Metglas has supported the River Oaks Elementary Otterbots for two years and will also be helping a first-time robotics team from Burgess Elementary School in the coming school year.
Horry County Schools produced a video describing the program and their participation, which shows the interest generated by the FIRST program here in our local community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-61dNYlZT_4&list=PLacLfwNJl9nr7AgnG-VGFfPymFE9rQJSv
